Luang Prabang : Luang Prabang is a city located in north central Laos, on the Mekong River, about 425 km north of Vientiane, and the capital of Louangphrabang Province. The current population of the city is about 22,000. The city was formerly the capital of a kingdom of the same name. Until the communist takeover in 1975, it was the royal capital and seat of government of the Kingdom of Laos. The city is also notable as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (source: Wikipedia)

Luang Prabang is the jewel of Indochina, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. The ancient royal city is surrounded by mountains at the junction of the Mekong and its tributary, the Khan river. In the centre of the city is Mount Phousi with stunning views of the surrounding temples and hills. Luang Prabang is a city where time seems to stand still. As part of the UNESCO plan, new buildings have been limited and development must be in keeping with this magical place. from:http://www.visit-laos.com/where/luangprabang/

Temples of Luang Prabang : The quiet, small town atmosphere of Luang Prabang encouraged us to spend several days just wandering around, sauntering through the streets, in and out of temple courtyards, and across the foot bridges to an even smaller village on the other side of the river. At the temples, we met a number of novice monks, many of whom wanted to practice their English. Many of them came from farmer families of outlying villages. Becoming a monk allows them to get a better education than they'd receive in their home village. At the age of twenty, they can choose to remain a monk, find a job, go to college, and/or get married. Not long ago, it was common for all male youth to become monks, at least for a few months.

Trekking - A Village, Elephants, and Waterfalls : This was a one day trek. An hour elephant ride (doesn't hurt as much as a camel!). Then hiking to a village, with a stop at some waterfalls on the return.
