Nairobi : I spent a couple of days in Nairobi before my safari. Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is 5,400 feet above sea level, which means it is not as hot as the coast, and malarial mosquitoes do not live at this altitude. With a population of 3-4 million people, it is the 4th largest city in Africa.

"Animal Orphanage" near Nairobi : This "animal orphanage" takes in injured and orphaned animals, however my guidebook likens it to a glorified zoo. The best part was getting to pet the cheetahs...they purr very loudly!

Orphanage visit : One of the highlights of our trip was this visit to an orphanage, an hour or so from Nairobi. The children showed us their dormitories and played games with us. We had dinner, sang songs, and saw a slide show in their cafeteria. This orphanage is relatively adequately funded and seems to be run well, like the ones I've seen in Romania and Montenegro.

Lake Nakuru : Lake Nakuru is famous for its enormous flocks of pink flamingos, sometimes numbering 1-2 million. Recently, the lake's size has decreased, and the flamingos are migrating to other lakes in Kenya. Many have also been found dead, and local sewage and industry are often blamed. The flocks we saw were massive. It's hard to imagine what it looks (and sounds) like here during peak years. We went down by the water twice, as well as going to "Baboon Cliff" where we got a bird's eye view of the lake.

Hiking - On Foot : A one-hour walk outside of the truck, among herds of giraffe, zebras, and water buffalo. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Apparently, this area is devoid of big predators, so we didn't have to worry about lions and cheetahs. In addition to our guide, we were accompanied by an armed guard, just in case a hippo or buffalo decided to charge. The animals kept their distance...as we'd approach, they'd walk slightly ahead, often looking over their shoulders to keep an eye on us. It was very peaceful, and one hour was hardly enough.

Masai Mara Reserve : The Masai Mara Reserve is the northern tip of the Serengeti savanna. Herds of wildebeest come here in the summer months to escape the dry season in Tanzania, further south. We were here at the right time to see the migration, but unfortunately we didn't have the flexibility in our schedule to actually get up close to the actual migration. Nevertheless, we some some incredible wildlife, and we did see the herds from a distance as they were just entering Kenya.

Safari - Trip Pics: Camping & On the Road : My "game drive" photos are in albums by location (Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, etc).

The photos in this album, however, are mostly of the people on the safari, as we camped and drove between reserves. It includes people pictures and "memory shots" from our campsites and on the road.
