Beara Peninsula : Less touristy than "The RIng of Kerry," this corner of Ireland is quiet and beautiful. The wind pushes the rain inland, so it is often a sunny (or at least dry) little corner of Ireland while the rest of the country is getting wet. The gulf stream also creates a micro climate, making this one of the warmest parts of Ireland.

Dzogchen Beara Buddhist Retreat Center : I found this place in the Lonely Planet guidebook. Due to the recession, there was no need to book in advance anywhere in Ireland, so everywhere I went, I was able to find a place to stay. This let me play it by ear every day, my favorite way to travel. I arrived here on a Thursday and spent the night in the hostel (an old country cottage) where I met a few other travellers. The Center was having a weekend meditation workhsop, so they were booked Friday and Saturday. I would loved to have stayed, but it was expensive. ($250 for two day workshop.) I can do meditation workshops in India for $15 a day including my room, so I decided not to spend the weekend. My 16 hours here was enough time to get a feel for the place.

Garinish Island : A short boat ride from Gringarriff (in West Cork on the edge of the Beara Peninsula) brings you past seals to this island garden. No roads, no cars. A micro climate caused by the Gulf Stream keeps this place from freezing, making it an ideal location for exotic flowers and plants from all over the world. Ring Of Kerry : The Ring of Kerry is a popular tourist trek on the Iveragh Peninsula, County Kerry, in the SW of Ireland. It's beauty and popularity remind me of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park or Highway 1 through Big Sur in California. Tour buses herd thousands of tourists around the 100 mile route, getting off to snap photos, buy souvenirs, eat lunch, and drink coffee or beer. But drive or walk five minutes off the route, and you've got a beach, a cliff, or a forest to yourself.

Kells Bay Garden : I was following the tourist buses along the Rink of Kerry when I spotted a sunlit beach so I left the main route to explore. If I hadn't rented a car, I never would have stumbled upon these beautiful gardens. The gardens date back to 1837, though they have only recently been opened up to the public. The property includes four gardens (Palm and Succulent Garden, Walled Garden, Primeval Forest, Bamboo Glade), two walks (River Walk & Cliff Walk) and a lovely, sunny restaurant/cafe.

Derrynane National Historic Park : Derrynane House was the ancestral home of Daniel O'Connell, the Irish statesman who played an important role in gaining Catholic Emancipation in 1829.

Derrynane National Historic Park consists of some 120 hectares of plantations, sandy beach, and garden walks, which were laid out in the 18th and 19th centuries north and west of the house.
